Strong Bad Email Reviews

#5: making out

We might have an actual short one today, folks - it’s Strong Bad Email #5, “making out”! If you want to watch it before we begin, you can see it on YouTube or the HomestarRunner site. This one comes in at a solid 59 seconds, with the SBEmail menu description telling us the following:

“A fan asks for dating advice so SB suggests using a song he wrote. And then totally doesn't show or perform said song. Huh.”

True to the description, not a ton actually happens in this email. One notable thing is that, instead of “Tandy 400!”, the page title is “Frampton’s Camel”, which is the name of both Peter Frampton’s second studio album from 1973 and the name of the band he was playing with at the time.

After a quick email song, we get this email:

Ah, self-aggrandizement at its finest.

This isn’t our first Peter Frampton reference - remember the Strong Bad Main Page we discussed in SBEmail #2? Well, that had some Frampton in it, so we know Strong Bad is at least a fan of the man. However, in this case, Strong Bad declares himself to be the love doctor, and it won’t be the last time he does. (I look forward to talking about Dr. Marvin Rubdown in, at this rate, a few years.)

In what will soon become an uncharacteristic move, Strong Bad brings up one of his famous songs, “You’re Really Ugly (But There’s Nobody Cute Around)”. This is not one of the songs from the Strong Bad Sings cartoon, nor is it on the CD. In fact, we never get to hear it. However, this is the first in a long series of instances where Strong Bad claims to be great with the ladies. We have little to no evidence that he actually is.

Strong Bad closes by comparing the boyfriend’s future status to “the King of Town on a Chinese buffet.” Who is this King of Town?

This is the King of Town, eater of… many things. Is he really a King? Strong Bad says he’s more of a self-declared king than a real one, but regardless, he doesn’t do much governing. He used to be Marzipan’s father, but that got dropped somewhere along the way.

For a quick introduction to the King of Town (often known as “The KOT”), just check out his character video. It’s pretty illuminating.

Corn dog batter? I mean, I get it.

Yes, the King of Town’s major character trait is gluttony. Thankfully, he’s not depicted as obese, just sort of supernaturally able to eat whatever. Strong Bad does shame him for his gluttony, though, so your mileage may vary in terms of goof enjoyment on that front.

So yeah, that’s the email. Not much to it, but at least we get to talk about the King of Town, who does like to say “Doo hoo hoo.” I almost forgot about this email and skipped to the next one by accident, so I think it’s safe to say we have a C-Tier email on our hands. See you next time for one I definitely like more!

Thanks as always to HRWiki.org, where I do all my research to make sure I have the history and connective tissue of these emails correct.
